Italian restaurant in Glasgow

"Coia’s Cafe Restaurant" in Glasgow, Scotland, is an institution deeply rooted in the history and culture of the city. Since its founding in 1928 by Italian immigrants Carmine and Amalia Coia, the establishment has evolved from a small café serving homemade ice cream and juices to a thriving restaurant now run by the third generation of the Coia family. Alfredo and Antonia Coia have taken up the legacy of their ancestors and transformed the business into a modern yet tradition-conscious place known for its culinary delights and warm atmosphere. The restaurant is located in the eastern part of the city and is a popular meeting spot for locals and visitors looking for authentic Italian cuisine with a touch of Scottish hospitality.

The decor is cozy and inviting, with a hint of nostalgia that recalls the café's beginnings, combined with contemporary elements added through renovations and expansions. Particularly noteworthy is the expansion into an adjacent building, which not only created more seating but also provided space for a delicatessen and an expanded ice cream parlor. The atmosphere is lively yet not overly loud, making it an ideal spot for families, friends, or a relaxed meal for two.

Seafood lovers will delight in the "Seafood Pasta," served with fresh shrimp, mussels, and a spicy tomato sauce. Not to be missed is the legendary "Vanilla Ice Cream," made according to Amalia Coia's original recipe and often served with a generous portion of raspberry sauce—known as "McCallum"—a local specialty that combines history and flavor. Food was lovely. Staff were excellent showed curtesy, patience and respect for my elderly mum who is in a wheelchair. Lovely chilled out couple of hours, only downside is feeling a tad rushed as the table had another party coming in , we didn't have time for coffee.

Always enjoy Coia's - fantastic food, great ambiance and great friendly staff. Only (minor) hassle was the amount of time it took to find our coats!

Came for a family lunch full table served meal minus mine. I then waited over 25 minutes for my meal to arrive when full table was finished and ordering desserts for the kids. No apology or explanation. I only ordered a simple pasta nothing out of the ordinary. As a family we spent £200 so better service would have been expected.

As a regular customer at Coia's, once again I can say everything about this restaurant is perfect. Very busy when myself and friends went there on Saturday, so we had a short wait before being seated. One of the lovely waiters asked us to wait in the delicatessen part of the restaurant so that we didn't have to wait outside. We didn't have to wait too long and then placed our order. To our surprise and delight, a waiter came with a bowl full of lovely crusty bread, and a great spicy dip - it must have been because of the wait - how lovely and generous ! The meals as always were delicious and worth every penny. The service is always unbelievably great and the staff can't please you enough, always making sure you're happy. I can't say enough about this brilliant family run place and would highly recommend to anyone. Thanks to all at Coia's !

For the large part, the food was excellent, as always. However, my wee Mum was with us and suffers from stomach issues so just wanted something simple - she ordered a portion of chips and a portion of halloumi. When her plate arrived, there was a normal serving of fries but one very small slice of halloumi. I thought this was incredibly poor :(
